Working with Tasks

Working with Tasks

Summary: A task is a unit of work with a page, a workflow state, and (usually) an assignee. This topic orients you to the whole lifecycle before the how-tos below.

What it is

A task is the smallest durable unit of work in Runcible. Every task has a page (so talk and files stay with the work), a place in a program/project tree, and a workflow state that moves it from idea to done.

When you'd use it

Whenever something needs to be remembered, owned, scheduled, or billed — capture it as a task. Don't leave real work only in chat or a personal note.

The lifecycle (at a glance)

  1. Create the task on a project (or capture it personally, then move it).
  2. Plan — nest it, link it, set priority.
  3. Estimate effort or points.
  4. Assign a person, a role, or a team.
  5. Forecast / schedule — put time on a calendar.
  6. Confirm the commitment.
  7. Do the work — comment on the wall, attach files, charge time and expenses.
  8. Complete the workflow (owner/approvers close it as your process requires).

The topics below walk each of those steps. If you only remember one sequence, remember The Task Workflow.
